Hello friends,
We come across many medical situations where somehow appropriate diagnosis could not take place or in spite of the proper diagnosis and treatment, desired improvement or result is not seen in the patient In such situations, Reiki has proved to be very helpful. There is overall ignorance and misbelieves about Reiki. To help you all understand about Reiki, I have published here, in the form of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), the discussion between me and my father Dr. Shyamkant Modak, who is a veterinary doctor, also learnt and practiced Reiki and became ‘Grand Master in Reiki’ in the year 2000. He has learnt and has been practicing Reiki purely based on the scientific medical basis, treating hundreds of patients, keeping their records. With his consistent observations over last ten years, he has developed QCPSMms (Quartz Crystal Pendulum Spiritual Medicine-modak system). This system have been giving very good results for assessment of the patient’s health. Using Distant Reiki technique with CPSMms, Dr. Shyamkant Modak has successfully diagnosed and treated many local and overseas patients. I do hope that this information will help you understand the scientific medical basis of Reiki. If you need any further information or help, please feel free to mail me (drhsmodak@gmail.com). Also let me know your opinion about this blog and any suggestions thereof.
With best regards,
Dr. Hemant Modak
F.A.Q.s - Reiki the Spiritual Medicine in Ayurveda
What is Reiki? Who developed it in to a healing system?
‘Reiki’ is a Japanese term. ’Rei’ means ‘universal’ and ‘ki’ means ‘life-energy force’. So Reiki means universal life energy force. The term Reiki is used normally to designate a healing system wherein the universal life energy force is used as the healing material. So in the Japanese, this system is called ‘Usui Sheiki Ryoho’ meaning ‘Usui’s System of Natural Healing’. Dr. Mikao Usui developed it. He was from Japan .
When and how did you happen to develop keen interest in Reiki?
I am a veterinary science graduate and practiced veterinary allopathic medicine in domestic animals for over twenty five years. During the period, I got troubles of chronic dysentery, duodenal ulcer, diabetes mellitus, benign prostate hyperplasia, tinnitus in the ears, cataracts in both eyes and intentional tremors in both hands as complications of old age or of diabetes mellitus. With the doctors’ medical help, I was struggling to relieve myself from these medical ailments. Consequently I had to give up veterinary practice. Alternatively my knowledge and graduation in Indian classical music helped me and my wife to sustain living. With growing age I got bored with the schedules of dietary restrictions and the side effects of the medicines. The ever increasing costs of treatments too added to worries.
In February, 1996 one of my well-wishers insisted on me to try self-healing with Reiki. I learned first degree in Reiki and within a month I experienced considerable relief which was holistic. I experienced the meaning of the term ‘holistic’. With self confidence and growing enthusiasm I learned the further degrees in Reiki and became a Reiki master and teacher. From June, 1997, I started teaching Reiki and in October, 2000, my guru Dr. Mrs. Rekha Kale qualified me as ‘Reiki grand master’.
Since then I have always treated human patients to heal with pure Reiki and have experimented to develop a technique whereby it should be possible to compliment the present medicinal treatment procedures with the spiritual healing role of Reiki. Thus I worked to develop ‘QCPSMms (Quartz Crystal Pendulum Spiritual Medicine - modak system). I found this system very effective and having vast scope for research in its applications. I feel that I could do this because being a medical student; I have the knowledge of allopathy with critical scientific approach towards health problems.
What is the basic principle of Reiki?
Long back I visited the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai. There it was amusingly explained, according to the accepted theory, when a very strong explosion (popularly called the ‘big bang’) took place in the source mass, how the universe originated from a mass of hot active gases which separated from a source-mass existing in space at infinity
Our planet earth also was formed from active hot gases composed of highly active energy particles derived from the source mass. Every thing on the earth originated from the same type of energy particles. That portion of the universal energy which formed the living beings is called the ‘universal life energy force’. In the Japanese it is the 'Reiki' and in Indian languages it is the ‘Vaishwik Pranashakti’. This life-energy is used in the body firstly as a source of inspiration (drive) needed for keeping the body active, alive and growing; secondly for making of body cells, tissues and organs; and lastly as fuel for liberating heat energy for performing different processes by the body-systems. A perfect balance of all these activities defines 'perfect health' and an imbalance a 'disease.'
In the Usui’s system of natural healing one acquires ability to handle the Reiki and make it available to the ailing/diseased parts of the body. The body receives it and heals itself to get rid of the disease. Therefore in one sentence we can say, “In healing with Reiki, we use the pranashakti itself in place of medicines (chemical energies) or other energies such as electricity, sound, heat, etc”.
Is Reiki treatment superior to any of the other available treatments? Which diseases can be cured by Reiki?
Measures adopted repeatedly, frequently and successfully to achieve relief from ailments or diseases are called methods / systems of treatment. It is common that one calls ‘that treatment the best’ which suits him/her the best. It is undoubtedly true that even the best treatment can prove true only in the intelligent hands of its user. I am sure that any person who adopts Reiki with full faith and honesty can be effective in healing any trouble holistically. I also experienced that Reiki healed death by making it painless and peaceful. The period required to achieve complete cure with Reiki depends on the faith and openness of mind with which the patient receives and the donor practices it.
In my opinion and experience, Reiki treatment is superior to any of the other treatments. By learning Reiki and performing its penance one can develop confidence in him/her self that not only can S/he heal his/her all diseases and ailments without needing any medicines and external help but s/he can also achieve relief from mental tensions and negative emotions to live joyful, prosperous life. Then s/he need not think of resorting to magical remedies and amulets from persons who cheat and exploit innocent people. We should consider adopting Reiki as the best, harmless and easy to-learn tool to save the people from superstitious tricks.
Now-a-days, doctors often advice patients to learn and follow yoga for achieving natural physical and spiritual fitness. Can they advice to go in for Reiki instead of yoga? Does Reiki have any special advantages as compared to yoga?
Reiki is introduced to humanity very recently than yoga which is established since ages and is accepted world over for centuries ago. Reiki is not only a system of treating disease but it is a system of healing life. Reiki is a penance. Indian system of penance is called the yoga. Literally yoga means a planned thing. What people learn generally in yoga classes is the ‘Shareer yoga’ meaning planned body exercises. Other known forms of yoga are ‘karma yoga’, ‘bhakti yoga’, ‘dnyaan yoga’, ‘raaj yoga’, ‘hathayoga' , 'maanas yoga’ etc. The ‘ Paatanjal yoga sutra’ in the Sanskrit language defines yoga as ‘anushaasana’ meaning ‘self discipline’ and as ‘chitta vrutti nirodha’ meaning ‘controlled mind and tendency of behavior’. From my experience I feel that Reiki should be called ‘pranashakti yoga’. The main advantage experienced with Reiki is that, with Reiki one can heal himself and can also help others from near or from any distant place to heal them selves. Reiki is so easy to practice that even the old, convalescent persons and school-age children also can practice it to help themselves and others.
Does Reiki effect adversely?
No. Reiki is received by the receiver willfully. A Reiki channel can only make it available in to the receiver’s aura. The receiver takes it in from his aura and uses it to cure his illnesses. The receiver’s body accepts only the required quantity of Reiki and uses it at the right places within. So there is no possibility of overdosing with Reiki.
On starting treatment with Reiki, as with any other system of treatment the patient feels marked relief in the beginning and then experiences that the rate of improvement goes on slowing down. This slowing occurs because the healing energies experience increasing resistance of the disease-causing energies. Thus at times there is increase in the gravity of symptoms which increases to top and then declines as the recovery grows faster to complete. This is the phenomenon of ‘healing crisis in natural healing’. This is where the new patient of Reiki treatment fears of the crisis and is likely to abandon Reiki treatment. The Reiki channel treating him should give him clear idea at the beginning to avoid the misunderstanding.
No Reiki channel should ever boast of his having cured so many patients with Reiki. On the other hand, in the resolution he chants in his mind before giving or sending Reiki, he has to express gratitude towards the patient for accepting his help. He has to follow correct technique with sincere love and affection towards the patient. Reiki can not be used to punish any body.
Can Reiki be given or taught to any body?
Reiki can be given or sent to anybody who is willing to receive it. It can be sent to an innocent child, an unconscious person, a lunatic, a mentally retarded child or to a person in deep sleep without their knowledge because in those conditions their bodies accept it readily.
Reiki can be taught to any individual, the depth of details depending upon the understanding capacity of the learner. Even illiterates can learn and use Reiki successfully without knowing its theory in detail. I had occasion to teach Reiki in basic short course to a senior gentleman aged 95 years and a child aged 6 years. The senior could benefit himself well but the child failed to have patience of mind, though the receiver could sense good supply of Reiki from the child’s hands. The child can learn Reiki and take Reiki for itself at its sweet will and heal itself holistically - meaning physically, mentally and spiritually throughout the life.
I teach a basic short course in first degree of Reiki only for their own use, to illiterate persons, debilitated patients of chronic diseases and to cancer patients who are under treatment with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. In the cancer patients it was seen that with the help of Reiki they could tolerate the side effects of those therapies very well
How can Reiki benefit senior citizen?
In the present age of fast and hectic life, full of mental tensions and fears, both, men and women strive very hard to earn comforts of livings. They wear themselves so much that after retirement from jobs they notice that their bodies have been mostly dilapidated and many of them live as if, because they can not die. In such condition, a regular penance of Reiki for an hour-and-a-half or as leisure available, can enable them to be brighter and lively at no cost to enjoy the future free retired years. I learned Reiki from sixty first year of my age and am able to make my old age meaningful by keeping myself busy treating patients with Reiki, helping school children with Reiki to keep their minds fresh and free of tensions in the hard times of examinations. I am now useful to the people around me and am pleased that I am still needed by them. Besides, I am able to earn a portion of livings for me and my wife. By contributing to the knowledge of use of Reiki I am satisfied that I have been grateful to my society.
Is it necessary to create a ‘typical atmosphere’ and to observe certain conditions of direction of sitting, posture, time, place, bathing, preparatory fasting, wearing special attire etc. before performing penance of Reiki?
No. There is no prescribed formula of preparatory procedures. Reiki is even not forbidden for women in menstruation period. As a matter of fact, Reiki in that stage is helpful to solve the problems of pains, excessive unhealthy discharge, irregular menses, infertility etc. Meditation is taught and practiced in yoga. In Reiki also it is essential to concentrate the mind on the task to visualize that the target specified in the resolution ( which is a part of the initiating prayer), is achieved in full. The only condition to be fulfilled is that we have to hold ourselves in communion with the objective of healing self, the patient, the subject or event etc. with utmost innocence and without prejudice to any thing else related to it. I found that regulating breath in a way (which differs a little from the pranayaama in yoga) helps to increase availability of more and more oxygen to the respiratory apparatus to improve its strength and capacity. I teach breath regulation to my students at the beginning of the first degree Reiki course. I also teach them to achieve meditation as a pre-requisite to learning Reiki. The patient or the receiver of Reiki has to close his/her eyes, fold palms together and resolve in his/her mind to thank the Reiki giver, the Reiki itself and his/her own body (by his/her first name) and declare that he has achieved complete favorable results. I think this procedure is comparable to wireless communication or short message service on mobile phone.
What was it that devoted you so much to Reiki?
I can list below the important benefits I experienced from Reiki:-
1. Almost all chronic ailments and diseases that troubled me for pretty long durations are either cured or are under control mainly with Reiki and with the least medication. This strengthened my stamina and increased healthy feel at no cost and without observing strict dietary restrictions.
2. Reiki is successful and easy to practice any where, any time and without any instruments, materials etc.
3. Reiki can be sent 'in absentia' to the receiver who may be present elsewhere. The receiver can take it as and when s/he feels its’ need, of course within the period of its validity set by the sender. The receiver of course, has to follow the receiving procedure properly.
4. I have always been a student of science and am against exploitation of innocent and ignorant people by immersing their minds in deceptive superstitions. I am a devotee of Reiki since twelve years because I am convinced that Reiki is scientific method
5. I realized that Reiki, founded on the principles of gratitude, love, compassion and peace and being the universal life energy force by itself, cannot do anything bad to any body. It is neither allied to hypnotism, jugglery etc. nor can it be used to do such acts because the receiver receives Reiki at his own will.
6. Reiki is beyond all limitations of religion, language, nationality etc. and it is the easiest and simplest system for rendering service to humanity. Senior citizens and physically handicapped can practice Reiki and make them selves happy, healthy and prove them selves useful to the society from wherever they are.
In Reiki what is the link between the doctor (Reiki giver) and the patient (Reiki Receiver)?
A Reiki channel, namely the giver of Reiki is linked to the receiver patient only through Reiki which is enriched by love, compassion and forgiveness. A good doctor of any system can become a Reiki channel and complement the treatment s/he gives to his/her patient by his/her system of medicine with Reiki to achieve best results. A Reiki channel however may not necessarily be a doctor of any system of medicine.
How far true is the convention that Reiki can be sent to a patient who is at another place away from the Reiki sender?
It's quite true. A Reiki channel who has learned at least the second degree course and has resolved in his/her mind to send Reiki to the particular patient to heal can send distant Reiki to a receiver patient who is present any where in the universe and has resolved in his/her mind of having received Reiki from the sender to heal his/her diseases or problems etc.
Describe examples of patients who got relief from the trouble or disease instantly or in due course of time.
Out of hundreds of patients treated, I describe here in short just two events as examples:
1. On a hot summer afternoon I was traveling on a passenger bus. I was seated on the first bench and on the opposite bench behind the driver’s cabin sat a middle age couple with their two children. They were perhaps on return journey to home having visited a holy place and having roamed about there since morning in bright hot sun. After some time I noticed that the lady felt uncomfortable feeling of nausea and acted restraining herself from vomiting out. I got scared with the idea of what would be my plight if her attempts failed. Immediately I started delivery of distant Reiki to the event that I am saved from the embarrassing consequences if the lady fails to overcome the discomfort and the consequent mishap occurs. In just a few minutes the lady started having mild perspiration and relief from the discomfort. She wiped her sweaty face with a napkin and it returned to normal. Mutely I thanked her for her favorable response, thanked Reiki for doing the needful and thanked myself for participating in the event, thus closing the procedure. The lady did not appear to think about what brought the relief to her.
I got such varied experiences while in travel. In all such events I did not give any idea of my involvement in them to the concerned. In these experiments I studied how and under what conditions does the distant Reiki effect. The results were favorable and encouraging in all the cases, perhaps because the relief was the most imminent need of each of the sufferers.
2. The father of a friend of my son lives in a village which is about six hundred kilometers from my town. That friend during a casual talk, mentioned to my son that his father was not well since last two-three months. His fathers blood pressure was intermittently fluctuating, needing frequent hospitalizations in intensive cardiac care unit. Due to this trouble, his father had become very weak and was unable to climb down even the bed. Advised by my son, his friend contacted me on telephone and narrated the above situation. I explained to him that I shall send distant Reiki twice daily and will scan the patient’s health problems etc. and heal them with Reiki through crystal pendulum as and when I feel necessary. I asked his father’s full name, complete birth date and detailed residential address with telephone numbers. I also asked him to convey my instructions to his father about how he will receive Reiki regularly two times daily and also at other times whenever he may need it. We agreed on the terms and on receiving patient’s oral acceptance on telephone I started treatment with Reiki.
A week later the friend reported that the patient was improving fast. At the end of the month the patient himself responded to my call on telephone with heart full of pleasure of his recovery which enabled him to go alone to the farm regularly to supervise the work there. It is interesting to note here that I and the patient had not even seen or knew each other before and also that we were not required to get in contact at any fixed timings. I had not asked the patient to stop taking medicines prescribed to him by his doctor. He himself had kept the medicines away when he started getting relief with Reiki treatment.
What dietary and other restrictions are to be observed during treatment with Reiki?
There are no specific restrictions. I follow the following rules set by me for myself and request my patients to follow the same.
1. To take self Reiki regularly, daily, without fail, preferably by touch method .with full trust in self confidence to recover only with its use. I ask the untrained patients to receive distant Reiki from me regularly and also whenever they feel the need.
2. Take simple, nutritious and possibly balanced diet at regular intervals and in just needed quantity. Eat any eatables within normal, tolerable limits.
3. Simple living with positive and realistic attitude keeping normal satisfied mind to avoid excitements.
4. Continue routine activities in moderate proportion to keep you busy. Do not exert more than you can bear during illness or convalescence. Do not forget that ‘empty mind is devil’s workshop’ and that ‘change of work is better relief than anything else'.
In which other countries is importance attributed to Reiki?
I am not sure. Reiki may be known and practiced there under some local names. The procedures also may vary to suite local conditions and to peoples’ beliefs. Reiki came to India somewhere in the decade of 1980-1990 from America . It originated in Japan being known as Reiki.
The main three Japanese symbols of mantras in Reiki appear to match with those in Sanskrit in the ‘Vedas’. The sets of three symbols each in the Japanese and in the Sanskrit were tried to compare with each other and found to agree in their effects. I prefer to follow and use the Japanese symbols which are as if the heart of the ‘Usui’s System of Natural Healing’ with full faith and grateful regards for late Dr. Mikao Usui who developed the healing system
Describe your personal pleasing experience of Reiki.
Self confidence developed in me is the best experience I got from Reiki. Now I enjoy my daily life with full confidence and positive attitude. I am now always fresh, bright, energetic and eager to help others in need.
Is it possible to restart a motor car engine, a radio or a TV set with Reiki?
I have experienced that on giving Reiki to almost dead dry battery pencil-cells of a small battery operated radio it could be used for a short time to hear the head lines of a news bulletin. It is scientifically true that energy conserves itself and converts itself into other forms. This phenomenon might have worked in this example.
I don’t think it is possible for any expert of Reiki to generate enough electric current to restart a motor car engine. I have heard people narrating magic experiences but personally I do not indulge in looking for such astonishing results from Reiki. I intend to popularize Reiki because it is the best thing ever available readily, any where and any time to relieve the agonies of pains of living beings and to save life in emergencies.
Can you suggest some books on Reiki for further reading?
Reiki is a subject covering vast field of knowledge. There must have been innumerable books available on it. I read those I could buy and study, some on Reiki, some others on aura (human energy field), spiritual healing systems etc. Any body interested can see them and make a list for himself. I regret that I cannot quote their names here because almost all authors have objected to quote them as official references.
.Do you feel that Reiki should be included in the area of extracurricular activities in the academic course syllabus of primary education?
As for a trial I attuned a child of five years of age to the first degree of Reiki and a short while later it could give Reiki by touch method effectively to another person receiving it. Still I feel that it was not desirable to be followed as a routine because the child was too young to remain quiet and concentrate its mind for long duration of fifteen minutes or more. Thus I decided that I shall not teach Reiki to an individual below eleven years of age. So I feel first degree Reiki course should be available to primary school children in fifth to seventh classes, second degree course to secondary school pupils in eighth to tenth classes, and third degree course to students of junior college in eleventh class. The syllabus for Reiki teacher course should necessarily be based on methodology of non-formal education. It will be appropriate that details of theory and practical parts of the syllabi and those of durations of all courses are worked out by a committee of appropriate educational experts who also are grandmasters of Reiki with good Reiki-teaching experience.
Do you feel that Reiki has been defamed and degraded in the minds of public because of the inexperienced practitioners and masters of Reiki who treat patients and teach Reiki ? Please be frank.
To be frank, yes! I am afraid, how many of the so called Reiki experts, including me who practice and teach Reiki have studied and thoroughly understood the theoretical scientific base of philosophy of Reiki and of the mode of action of Reiki in treating and healing disease conditions in the human body and in healing events, etc. Reiki is the subject which is to be taught to individuals of varied ages, educational levels, socioeconomic statuses and many a times in mixed groups. So the technique of non-formal education which is used in social development should be followed to teach Reiki. I also doubt about how many of the Reiki teachers know the said technique for teaching Reiki; and above all, how many of them are qualified either in medicine or in allied subjects. In our school days we learned enough about human health and hygiene. Do we remember it while treating patients with Reiki or while teaching Reiki? Do we realize the need to revise our knowledge of science occasionally? Almost all of us pass on the information we received from our gurus as it is or as we understood, to our learners. We give the knowledge to the learners for their life long use. So the notes we provide to them should be easy to understand preferably in their mother tongue or in any other language they understand well. We almost lack in these matters and hence fall short of convincing the critics about the correct concept of Reiki. I think we must hold ourselves responsible for why Reiki is losing regard of the people.
Can Reiki be useful to treat mental disorders?
I think yes. Reiki heals holistically that includes physical, mental and spiritual healing. One can surely heal her/himself simply by taking full body Reiki daily and maintain the healed status without needing any medication. Then s/he knows how to enjoy the beauty of life. S/he can also help other individuals to free themselves from mental tensions, depression etc. and to improve disturbed interpersonal relations also. They can then learn Reiki and help themselves. A Reiki channel that has learned second degree course can use distant Reiki procedure to help many individuals simultaneously. I am experimenting on needy sufferers by using the QCPSMms (Quartz Crystal Pendulum Spiritual Medicine-modak system) developed by me and am getting encouraging responses. It seems there is vast scope ahead. If successful and accepted by the medical world including different systems, the QCPSMms may become a boon to humanity.
Do you conduct Reiki classes? So far how many individuals have been trained successfully?
About five hundred persons took training during hundred sessions conducted by me during the last ten years. The number is too small comparing with the numbers trained by other Reiki masters. This is because I was interested to study Reiki to my satisfaction and to impart the best possible knowledge to my students. I prepared myself study material for my students, in the form of detailed clear notes in my mother tongue Marathi. In my class I admitted limited number (max. 6) so that I could be sure I was giving my best doubtless knowledge to each of them. It is beyond my ability even to conduct a follow up survey now. I took personal data of each trainee through a form of bio-data which s/he filled-in along with the admission form. I conducted follow up meetings of the trainees three weeks after each course when each filled-in a follow up form describing his experiences of three weeks penance. Therefore, in spite of these sincere attempts I doubt how many of my students can be called perfect in Reiki
Can treatment with Reiki be given simultaneously with any other medical treatment?
Yes, of course! Conventional medical treatments heal physically and mentally only and if it fails to adjust with the spirituality of the individual the healing is incomplete. Reiki treatment compliments those treatments by healing the emotional, mental and spiritual part of it. Thus Reiki can help achieve sure recovery with lesser quantities of medicines, and within shorter durations.
Is any pre-qualification necessary for taking treatment with Reiki or for learning it?
Pre-qualification is not necessary for both the things (Reiki learning or treatment). An illiterate individual also can learn and use Reiki normally. A Reiki teacher should possess ability and skill to teach Reiki taking into account the grasping limit of the learner.
What conditions are to be observed during the give-and-take-activity of Reiki?
By experience I have listed the following conditions:
1 One should have self confidence in both cases (give-and-take Reiki) that ‘S/he will heal her/himself’.
2 It is always important to remember that medicines and medical systems are just the materials and ways of treating the ailments and diseases. One should learn by experience and bear in mind that Reiki is the natural and ultimate means of healing naturally.
3 Use of medicines is a way of treatment and thereby we try to create conditions favorable for the body to make good the losses and deficiencies effected by disease. Medicines can not provide the wanting life energy force ( the pranashakti).
4: We can compensate the deficit of life energy force caused by disease processes in the body by supplementing with the life energy force which we take from the universal field through aura by taking self Reiki or by receiving Reiki from a Reiki channel. Taking medicines along with Reiki makes treatment safe
5 Our bodies receive life energy force to meet its needs for the normal life activities from the universal field free of cost. Additional life energy force to meet the extra needs to cure diseases and heal the body should not be taken free of cost from a Reiki channel as no energy in any other form is available free of cost. The terms, affordable to both parties should preferably be agreed to in advance.
6 A Reiki channel and Reiki teacher should not expect any fees for Reiki services or training given by him/her to very close relatives etc. whose welfare is his moral duty. In cases of others he should not give free services and create obligatory dues on them. Both parties should be clear in this regard so that their relations relating to Reiki can remain of gratitude.
7 Reiki transactions should necessarily be based on gratitude towards each other and expressed in the resolutions at the beginning of the procedures.
8. A Reiki should speak about his achievements in the field of Reiki to other people to enlighten them for their benefits and should not boast of himself. By boasting he will dishonor Reiki, he should not forget
Has Reiki gained publicity and is still being publicized through media?
Occasionally we come to know about broadcast of an interview on radio or witness such program on television. I did not find those explaining Reiki in its true and complete sense. Reiki therein is mostly depicted as a mystic phenomenon having got nothing to do with the systems of medicine. I got experience that media are not very willing to entertain Reiki, probably because the government has not formed definite policy about it and not approved it yet as a healing system. Perhaps nobody attempted in that direction
How did you confront the opponents of Reiki who say, “Reiki is superstition and cheating ignorant?”
I asked them that, Reiki which is so bad in your opinion, is existing to be known and practiced since over a hundred and fifty years. Are those people fools who do learn Reiki and practice it by spending their time and money. Did you ever at least tried to know about it before passing such nasty remarks against it?” They become speechless and have no word to utter. I say further, “I teach Reiki and ask my students to believe in self-dependence and achieve it through Reiki. Keep away from superstitious activities and maintain hygienic environment to keep the surrounding healthy." The opponents often agree to at least experience feel of Reiki and its effects before they criticize it any more.
Is Reiki recognized by government?
Ans.: We know that doctors practicing allopathic medicine, ayurvedic medicine, unani medicine, homeopathy etc. are registered as medical practitioners of relevant systems by concerned statutory controlling bodies formed by the government. I think there is no such body controlling Reiki practitioners
While studying the basics of ayurveda, I came to know that spiritual healing meaning ‘adhyatma’ and medicine meaning ‘vaidyak’ should go hand in hand as they are complimentary to each other. It pains me that medical world seems to have no concern with adhyatma (spirituality). Practicing Reiki equips an individual with spiritual skill to keep him self and others healthy and protected from diseases. Thus I feel that in India Reiki should be known as ‘adhyatma vaidyak’ and a ‘Bharatiya Adhyatma Vaidyak Parishad’ be founded and recognized by the government to regulate the profession.
Now because pollution and degradation of environment are posing grave problems of public health and hygiene before the world, importance of Reiki and other like systems of natural healing is becoming imminent. With growing awareness about Reiki among people and with growing shortage of good Reiki teachers and practitioners having knowledge of using Reiki through medical aspect, it is becoming an urgent need for such a body to exercise control on unlawful and deceitful activities of incompetent Reiki practitioners and Reiki teachers.
What should be done by the Indian States and Central governments for promoting and popularizing Reiki?
Ans.: Reiki is an inseparable and important portion of individual human life. Today it is necessary to persuade people to be on alert to practice it regularly and keep them fit to save themselves and others from ill health and diseases. Promotion of Reiki should be taken up as personal mission by every individual who has experienced and is enjoying the benefits of Reiki. This work is as humble and holy as is any important religious individual observance. It is the activity of motivating and convincing individuals to believe that only Reiki can help them to transform themselves to achieve mental peace and that Reiki is the best and easiest of the means to achieve it. Since this is a purely individual and personal campaign, there should not be any need of government interference through legislation.
It will be of great use if promotion is given to founding institutions to educate people with scientific knowledge of Reiki and to qualify well trained healers and Reiki teachers as also to institute a body to register Reiki practitioners, form a code of conduct for them and to implement it. That, in my opinion will be enough to do justice to Reiki by protecting it from being misused and from being labeled as a superstitious trickery.
